Hair is an integral component of your physical appearance and affects your mood and personality. Hair loss and baldness can lower your self-confidence and esteem. If you are dealing with hair loss and it is affecting you, then there are two things that you need to know.
First, you are not alone. According to the AHLA (American Hair Loss Association), nearly 60 percent of men in America experience various degrees of hair loss by age 35. Additionally, approximately 85 percent of men experience significant hair thinning by age 50. Hair regeneration issues are not unique to men; the condition affects women too, as 40 percent of the adults suffering from hair loss in the U.S. are women.
Secondly, we can treat hair loss or hair thinning. At Citrin Wellness, our experienced team uses proven regenerative-medicine hair restoration treatment protocols to help patients achieve fuller and healthier hair. Read on to learn more about hair loss and regenerative medicine.
Hair loss – What is it?
Generally, human beings lose between 50 to 100 hairs daily. However, this is not noticeable because of the rapid hair growth cycle that replaces lost hair with new ones. The hair growth cycle is often disrupted when the hair follicles become inactive or are unable to produce new hair quickly enough. But it becomes a problem when the hair growth cycle gets disrupted, leading to severe and rapid hair loss.
What are the different types of hair loss and their underlying causes?
Referred to as male-pattern or female-pattern baldness, it is one of the most common types of hair loss. It affects nearly 50 percent of the people dealing with reduced hair growth and follicle loss. Androgenic Alopecia is characterized by gradual and predictable patterns of hair loss. It starts with a receding hairline and some bald spots in men. Alternatively, the pattern of hair loss in women triggers hair thinning along the crown of the scalp.
The underlying cause of androgenic Alopecia is family history or genetics, which is also called hereditary hair loss.
Alopecia Areata is hair loss where your immune system attacks hair follicles. Hence, it results in bald patches or total hair loss. Apart from losing hair on the scalp, some people may also lose hair from their eyelashes and eyebrows. The underlying cause of alopecia areata is an autoimmune dysfunction. It is more common in people with existing AI disorders like thyroid diseases.
This hair loss type is because of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. However, hair usually grows back once the treatment stops. We have solutions to expedite the return to the growth phase.
Telogen Effluvium is a condition where you experience sudden hair loss. Several different factors can trigger TE, such as:
- Physical or emotional trauma
- Extreme stress
- A serious illness
- Hormonal changes because of pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause
- Malnutrition
- Stopping or starting hormonal birth control
- Endocrine disorder
- Medications (anti-depressants, steroids, etc.)
- Nutrient deficiencies (anemia)
Platelet Rich Plasma Fibrinogen (PRP/PRF) for Hair Restoration Explained
Though there is a range of treatment options for hair loss, at Citrin Wellness, we combine innovative regenerative modalities with conventional functional medicine for the best possible results. In many cases, we rely on PRF (platelet rich fibrinogen) for hair restoration.
PRF is a substance harvested from the patient’s blood using a centrifuge machine that separates blood into plasma and serum. The PRF is extracted from the plasma and has no synethic material added to it. Platelet-rich Fibrinogen (PRF) is a regenerative treatment proven to be very effective for hair loss. It is a safe alternative to hair transplant surgery that promotes natural healing.
Many people ask what is the difference between PRP and PRF. PRP has an anti-coagulant added to it. PRF is completely natural with no additives. Because this causes the blood to coagulate faster, it creates a clotting matrix and therefore is stronger and has shown to be more effective than PRP.
It is injected into the scalp to heal the bodily tissues, including hair follicles, and stimulate the hair into the Anagen (growth) phase. The growth factors and proteins in the PRF promote tissue repair and healthy hair growth.
Peptide Therapy
COPPER (GHK-CU) is a naturally occurring peptide we provide a single therapy or in combination with PRF.
Used for skin repair and hair regrowth.
GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper complex that was first identified in human plasma. They are small, naturally occurring protein fragments that have high affinity for copper ions. GHK-Cu has a variety of roles in the human body including, but not limited to, promoting activation of wound healing, attracting immune cells, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, stimulating collagen synthesis in skin fibroblasts, and promoting blood vessel growth.
They can play a big role in signaling tissue remodeling which removes damaged/scarred tissue and helping with generating new, healthy tissue. However, these positive effects decline with age because the concentration of GHK-Cu in the body decreases with age. As it deceases with age there is an increase in inflammation and tissue destruction. Since GHK-Cu plays an important role in skin biology, it is widely used in cosmetics as a reparative and anti-aging ingredient, as well as, used for hair regrowth.
